But Rin suddenly perks up.]

Yeah? You're an exorcist?

Yeah... we fight against those akuma and their creator the Millennium Earl.

[definitely a lot more to it than that but y'know. what to say...]

Oh man, me too! Or, well, I guess I'm in training, but I'll be one eventually.

[He now thinks they're co-workers. This is so exciting.]

Oh man, this is good news! Yukio'll be happy to hear it, he's an exorcist too.

[that would be real awkward if he ever found out why he's technically not an Exorcist anymore...]

Yukio's your brother?

Yeah, we're twins! Couldn't you tell?

[They are fraternal twins, so they look as much alike as any non-twin siblings would.]

I could see a resemblence, yes.

I'm the older one. That's important to remember.

[No it's not.]

I suppose so.

It must be nice to have a sibling.

It's alright. We fight sometimes, but I'd like to think we get along more than we fight.

So you're an only child then?

[lefthandpath]

Don't know. I don't remember my parents, and I'm more than fine with it like that.

[aono]

[Oh.

Rin pauses there, and it's like he's re-evaluating his conversation with Allen. It's not pity, not exactly, but it's more consideration to his words than he had previously been giving.]

So no older or younger kids where you grew up either? Family's not just about blood.

No. After I left the circus, I just travelled with my master. It wasn't until a year or so ago that I joined the Black Order of Exorcists. There were people my age there.

[and he is mentally patting himself on the back for being able to talk about the Order without getting weepy, tyvm.]

[Ur doing great Allen.]

You were in the circus? What'd you do there?

[He actually can't say that going from circus to exorcist is THAT weird, not when he knows why people suddenly change their life trajectory to 'exorcist' in his world. Some kind of trauma involving demons, he can guess that pretty easily. So he won't poke at that unless Allen feels like sharing it first.]

[you fool! all the trauma is in the circus!]

Odd jobs and stuff. Because my left hand looked a lot worse back then and was kinda useless, they stuck me with picking up and cleaning props, making sure performers got their meals, laundry... things like that. Kept me in the backstage so people didn't have to see it.

[He is definitely a fool who doesn't expect the circus trauma.]

Oh.

[But he can recognize that Allen's wording there means it wasn't exactly a happy time, so he'll quickly skip past that.]

Then becoming an exorcist must've been a big change, huh?

Mm, it was a very big change.

[aaaah no. allen walker, do not do this.

he lifts his hands to smack his own cheeks after a moment, exhaling. facepaint on, clown!]

Well, that's there and we're here now. So it's better to focus on that, for now.

Right.

[Rin gets the feeling that he shouldn't ask about that part of Allen's past anymore. But it feels incomplete, so Rin rushes to blurt out something:]

I grew up in a church! Not an Order-church, just a normal one. Once I got my powers, that's when I was taken in by the Order. And that was only about a year ago.

Ha, that's funny, so we got into the Exorcist thing around the same time?

Though, I guess I had those couple of years with Master who was avoiding the Order the whole while...

[Avoiding the Order...something about that makes Rin's eyes light up.]

We did! And you know, I think we might understand each other pretty well. So!

[He has this big doofy grin on his face as he holds out his hand towards Allen.]

Let's be friends, yeah?

how could you do this to Allen Walker, Okumura Rin?]

... either or both of us could die here, you know.

Either or both of us could die anywhere, at any time. Doesn't mean you should go through life keeping everyone away.

[no, stop?!

he stares at the hand. meanwhile, Rowan is hopping down off his shoulder and shifting to her canine form to come between the hand and Allen to... sniff at it. from safety distance. no touchy. but sniffy.

Allen's reaching out to grab her by the fur at her back a bit though, as if worried she'll go further.]

Rowan, don't.

[Rin does pull his hand back when Rowan starts to get too close. He remembers what happened with Yukio, he doesn't want that to happen to Allen too.]

Sorry buddy, handshakes are for people only. You get why, yeah?

[Rinkou, however, seems to be freely showing all of the affection and friendliness Rin wants to show. She's coming right up to Rowan to sniff at her, and then eventually try friend-headbutting her.]

[except that just leads to Rowan giving a startled yelp and retreating back against Allen who makes an "oof" when wolfdog practically sits in his lap.

he pats her head.]
